7 Level Curriculum System

Level Prior Experience Examples of Skills Taught Times & Days
Jr. Pawn
  • Has never played before.
  • Someone taught him/her how to move the pieces but not more.
  • Maybe has learned how to castle or what check is but not more than this.
  • Has played in a Non-Rated tournament (Example: Staser or Morrison Scholastic) or has never played in a tournament.
  • Perhaps has had a session or two of an afterschool or Community Center class.
    • How the pieces move and capture.
    • What is check and checkmate and the difference between the two.
    Sunday: 9am-9:50am
    Pawn A Pawn is a student who has passed my Junior Pawn Curriculum test
    (10 basic skills).
    • Student can perform the Queen + King vs. King checkmate in less than 1 minute.
    • Student can show and explain "en passant" and stalemate.
    Sunday: 9am-9:50am
  • Has graduated from my Pawn Class.
  • Has a USCF rating between 100 and 600.
  • Has attended more than 15 Pawn classes.
    • Understands what a perpetual check and perpetual draw are.
    Sunday: 10am-11:30am
  • Has graduated from my Knight Class.
  • Has a USCF rating between 601 and 1000.
    • Can explain and show what a "transition square" is.
    • Can explain what an "outpost" is.
    Sunday: 9am-11:30am
  • Has graduated from my Bishop Class.
  • Has a USCF rating between 1001 and 1400.
    • Can show and explain what "space" is.
    • Can show and explain "the bishop pair."
    Sunday: 9am-11:30am
  • Has graduated from my Rook Class.
  • Has a USCF rating between 1401 and 1800.
    • Can show and explain what a short term plan is.
    • Knows the Philidor and Lucena positions.
    Sunday: 9am-11:30am
  • Has graduated from my Queen class.
  • Has a USCF rating between 1801 and 2200.
    • Can show his main opening as white with the plans associated with it.
    • Can show his/her main opening as black as well as the plans associated with them.
